Katharina Wackernagel was born in Freiburg in 1978. She grew up in Kassel and founded her first theater group at the age of 9. At the age of 17, she was discovered and cast in the youth club of the Staatstheater Kassel for the role of “Tanja” in the ARD series of the same name. She played the lead role in the series for 39 episodes and won the Golden Lion for Best Actress in 1998.
Also in 1998, she made her first short film as a director, Think Positiv!, based on a script by her brother Jonas Grosch (Legend of Wacken, Last Exit Schinkenstrasse). The film won the Audience Award at the Dresden Film Festival. She wrote the screenplay, played the lead role, and produced the internationally successful short film Leonora's Song.
Further feature films followed, which she co-produced and acted in, while her brother Jonas Grosch wrote the screenplays and directed the films (Résiste! Aufstand der Praktikanten, Die letzte Lüge, and bestfreunde). The close collaboration allowed her to accompany the projects through post-production to completion. Inspired by this, the desire to direct herself grew.
Wenn Fliegen träumen, a road movie to Norway, became her feature film debut and premiered at the Hof International Film Festival in 2018. It screened at several festivals and was released in cinemas across Germany in 2019.
Katharina Wackernagel works as an actress, producer, and director.
